Are You Ready for Hurricane Season?

As Floridians, we understand the importance of preparing for hurricane season before the storm hits.  According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. Taking basic steps now, at the start of the season, will reduce future stress and help protect you, your family, and property. To get you started, we’ve created a simple preparedness checklist with links to helpful resources.

Prepare Your Supplies:

  • Avoid the last-minute rush. Stock up on hurricane supplies early. Every year, Florida legislators enact a tax-free shopping period for hurricane-related supplies. This year's Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday runs from May 28 through June 6. Visit the Florida Senate website for more information on allowed purchases and price limits.
  • Purchase bottled drinking water, non-perishable food, and toiletry items for you and your family. A good rule of thumb is to have enough of these items to last a minimum of 72 hours after the storm passes.
  • If a storm is coming you will want to ensure you have extra cash, gasoline, and medicine because electricity may be out and it may take time for stores and gas stations to reopen.
  • Build a kit of supplies to have after the storm passes. This may include tarps, batteries, flashlights, radios, a first aid kit, and general tools.

Have a Plan:

  • Know what evacuation zone you are in and decide ahead of time how and which route you will follow to evacuate if the order is given.
  • Establish a family communication plan with emergency contact information. Decide how you will contact each other, and consider there may not be cell phone service.
  • Make preparations now for what you will do with your pets, stock up on their food and medications, and have your vet’s contact information handy.
  • Make a list of items and belongings you plan to take with you, and only carry what is most necessary.
  • Assemble important documents in a waterproof container, including insurance information, emergency contacts, birth certificates and social security cards, and credit union account information.

Prepare Your Home:

  • Know your insurance policy, hurricane deductibles, and flood insurance requirements. Keep your insurance policy number and contact information readily available.
  • Create an inventory of your home’s contents such as electronics, jewelry, vehicles and appliances.
  • Clear clogged gutters and downspouts, and trim low-hanging or dead tree branches
  • Test run generators
  • Make sure your storm shutters are organized and labeled
  • A Home Equity Line Of Credit (HELOC) can be a helpful safety net in the event you have costly repairs or a high deductible.
